Goodmorning.Thiswasagoodweekforthecauseoffreedom.OnWednesdaynightinIraq,U.S.militaryforceskilledtheterroristZarqawi.

ThekillingofZarqawiisanimportantvictoryintheglobalwaronterror.ThisJordanian-bornterroristwastheoperationalcommanderofalQaidainIraq.Heledacampaignofcarbombings,andkidnappings,andsuicideattacksthathastakenthelivesofmanyAmericanforces,internationalaidworkers,andthousandsofinnocentIraqis.Zarqawihadalonghistoryofmurderandbloodshed.BeforeSeptemberthe11th,2001,heranacampinAfghanistanthattrainedterrorists--untilCoalitionforcesdestroyedthatcamp.HefledtoIraq,wherehereceivedmedicalcareandsetupoperationswithterroristassociates.

AfterthefallofSadd公務(wù)員之家版權(quán)所有am,ZarqawiwentundergroundanddeclaredhisallegiancetoOsamabinLaden,whocalledhimthe"PrinceofalQaidainIraq"andinstructedterroristsaroundtheworldto"listentohimandobeyhim."ZarqawipersonallybeheadedAmericanhostagesandotherciviliansinIraq;hemastermindedthedestructionoftheUnitedNationsheadquartersinBaghdad;andhewasresponsiblefortheassassinationofanAmericandiplomatinJordanandthebombingofhotelsinAmman.HisgoalsinIraqwereclear:Hewantedtostoptheriseofdemocracy,drivecoalitionforcesout,inciteacivilwar,andturnthatcountryintoasafehavenfromwhichalQaidacouldlaunchnewattacksonAmericaandotherfreenations.Instead,ZarqawidiedinthefreeanddemocraticIraqthathefoughtsohardtoprevent,andtheworldisbetteroffbecausethisviolentmanwillneverkillagain.

Iraqiscanbejustlyproudoftheirnewgovernmentanditsearlystepstoimprovetheirsecurity.AndAmericanscanbeenormouslyproudofthemenandwomenofourArmedForces,andtheintelligenceofficerswhosupportthem.Inthepastthreeyears,ourtroopshaveoverthrownacrueldictator,foughttheterroristsandinsurgentshousetohouse,andtrainedIraqiforcestodefendtheirnewdemocracy.Allthewhile,theystayedonthetrailofthisbrutalterrorist,perseveringthroughyearsofnearmissesandfalseleadsandnevergivinguphope.Thisweektheygottheirman.AndallAmericansaregratefulfortheirremarkableachievement.

Zarqawiisdead,butthedifficultandnecessarymissioninIraqcontinues.Intheweeksahead,violenceinIraqmayescalate.TheterroristsandinsurgentswillseektoprovethattheycancarryonwithoutZarqawi.AndCoalitionandIraqiforcesareseizingthismomenttostriketheenemiesoffreedominIraqatthistimeofuncertaintyfortheircause.TheworkaheadwillrequiremoresacrificeandthecontinuedpatienceoftheAmericanpeople.

I''''mencouragedbyPrimeMinisterMaliki''''sdeterminationtodefeatourcommonenemiesandbringsecurityandruleoflawtoallIraqis.Thisweekhetookanothermajorsteptowardthisobjectivewhenhecompletedtheformationofhiscabinet--naminganewMinisterofDefense,anewMinisteroftheInterior,andanewMinisterofStateforNationalSecurity.Thesenewleaderswillhelpthegovernmentaddressitstoppriorities:reconciliation,reconstruction,andputtinganendtothekidnappings,beheadings,andsuicidebombings.

Astheypursuethesegoals,theywillhaveAmerica''''sfullsupport.OnMonday,IwillconvenemynationalsecurityteamandotherkeymembersofmyCabinetatCampDavidtodiscussthewayaheadinIraq.OnTuesday,Iraq''''snewAmbassadortotheUnitedStateswilljoinus,andwewillhaveateleconferencediscussionwithPrimeMinisterMalikiandmembersofhiscabinet.TogetherwewilldeterminehowtobestdeployAmerica''''sresourcesinIraqandachieveoursharedgoalofanIraqthatcangovernitself,sustainitself,anddefenditself.
